About This Article
For founders building ambitious technology companies, Y Combinator remains one of the most recognized startup accelerators in the world.
Applications are currently open for the Winter 2027 batch, which will run from January through March in San Francisco. The on-time application deadline is November 2, 2026 at 8:00 PM Pacific Time.
Each company accepted into Y Combinator receives a US$500,000 investment under YC’s standard funding structure.
How the US$500,000 Investment WorksYC’s standard investment is split into two parts:
- US$125,000 for 7% of the company
- US$375,000 through an uncapped MFN SAFE
The second portion converts into equity based on future financing terms. YC also receives a pro-rata right allowing it to participate in later funding rounds.
Founders should understand the investment structure carefully before applying, particularly how SAFE financing affects future ownership and dilution.
International Founders Can ApplyOne of the most important things about YC is that applicants do not need to be based in the United States.
YC explicitly states that its application process is open to any startup, anywhere in the world.
That means founders from:
- India
- Nigeria
- Kenya
- Ghana
- South Africa
- Canada
- Europe
- Asia
- Latin America
- and virtually anywhere else
can apply.
Founders outside the United States also do not need to establish a U.S. company simply to submit an application. YC says it assists accepted international startups with the required incorporation and immigration process where applicable.
What Stage Should Your Startup Be At?YC is unusually open to extremely early companies.
According to YC, approximately 40% of companies it funds in a typical batch are still at the idea stage when accepted. Revenue is not required.
At the same time, more established startups with customers and revenue can also apply.
The key issue is whether the founding team can demonstrate the ability to build something significant.
Strong Categories for AI and Creator-Economy FoundersAlthough YC funds companies across virtually every industry, the current startup environment makes the program particularly relevant for founders working in:
- Artificial intelligence
- AI agents
- SaaS
- Developer tools
- Creator technology
- Marketing technology
- Financial technology
- Robotics
- Commerce
- Healthcare
- Education technology
- Infrastructure
- Consumer applications
YC does not require founders to build in one of its highlighted categories; it states that startups from any field may apply.
The Program Is In PersonOne important requirement is that the Winter 2027 batch takes place in person in San Francisco.
YC says founders are expected to participate there during the batch, although international teams can return to another country after the program ends.

For AI developers, creator-economy entrepreneurs and digital marketers building technology rather than simply selling services, YC represents an opportunity to think much bigger.
The question is not whether your company is already large.
The question is whether you are building something that could become large.
