Caribbean Voices & Pan Show 2018 will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018 from 7pm – 10pm at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, 7601 Hanover Pkwy, Greenbelt, MD.
“One spectacular evening of Caribbean music and spoken word, that is what you can expect at Caribbean Voices & Pan Show, 2018,” stated Karl Haughton of The Caribbean Current.
The esteemed vocalist, Steve Higgins, has directed many singing groups, including The Fifty-Voice South Florida Caribbean Chorale for which he is the Founding Director. He is a recording artiste certified by the Associate Boards of the Royal School of Music (Voice), and he has three solo albums to his credit. His albums cover upbeat jazz, love songs, religious classics, and authentic Jamaican Folk Songs.
Steve sang with David Reid and Cecil Cooper as a group called Dem 3 Jamaican Tenors; their splendid performances have wowed many audiences.
Steve has toured in Europe, the Americas and the Caribbean for over 25 years, and produced the annual Steve Higgins & Friends show for the past 15 years. He has performed favorites from Classical and Jazz to popular musical genres infused with Island music from his native Jamaica. Steve has sung at the New York Mets Games and was headliner at the Birmingham (UK) Commonwealth Association’s Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 90th birthday.
In 2012, the Jamaican Consulate in Miami presented Steve Higgins with the Honor Roll Certificate as a Change Maker in the South Florida community. In 2013, Jamaica’s Ministry of Culture awarded him a Certificate of Appreciation.
Caribbean Voices & Pan Show 2018 embraces the world-renowned Braata Folk Singers. This group has established itself among Jamaicans and the wider Caribbean Diaspora for its unique and dynamic presentation of the region's folk music, combining new choral arrangements with intricate dramatic choreography, design elements and costumes, to produce a Caribbean cultural “choral theater” at its best. Among its repertoire is a wide range of folk forms, including Mento, Dinki-Mini, Ring Games and Nine Night.
Jamaican born Andrew Clarke, actor/singer/producer, founded the Braata Folk Singers in 2009 and was recently featured in the Jamaica Gleaner as Ones To Watch In The Diaspora For 2018.
The Braata Folk Singers, in their relatively short history, have racked up an impressive array of national and international achievements. Early 2012 was when the Braata Folk Singers truly made their indelible mark, taking its cultural message to Canada then later that year to Cincinnati, Ohio where they participated in the World Choir Games, an international choral competition featuring choirs from all over the world. Braata, one of the smallest choirs in attendance, secured two silver medals and a bronze. What an achievement for their first ever competitive outing against choirs much larger and with more experience! This was certainly a wonderful gift to Jamaica on her 50th Independence celebration. The Braata Folk Singers ensemble was the only Jamaican choir in attendance, proudly carrying their Jamaican flag and spreading some Caribbean warmth.

Caribbean Voices & Pan Show 2018 will be spreading some of that musical Caribbean warmth coming from all ages. On Saturday, March 31, 2018 from 7pm to 10pm at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, you will enjoy the musical brilliance of young men and women of PANLARA Youth Steel Orchestra sharing their African-Caribbean culture through steel pan music.
The youths of PANLARA are spreading their warmth as they conduct regular seminars in local schools, churches and nursing homes by teaching the steel drum instrument. In addition to performing throughout the Caribbean, they have graced the stage internationally and performed at many of Washington, D.C.’s signature musical arenas, including John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Strathmore.
While the prestige of entertaining at venues such as the Smithsonian, the Naval Academy, DC Convention Center, and Blues Alley was electrifying, their greatest joy comes from one of their favorite projects, which is bringing their unique brand of music therapy to seniors and children of all ages. PANLARA has received the distinguished National Guard Community Service Award, the US Department of Agriculture Certificate of Appreciation, and the Montgomery County Certificate of Appreciation. The group has been featured on WPFW’s radio program “Live @5”, Fox5 News DC, ABC News DC, and the 1st Grace Jamaican Festival DC.
Caribbean Voices & Pan Show 2018 also welcomes spoken word artiste Jillian E. Moore, an author, a poet, a story teller, and an ardent volunteer for at risk youths and other causes in the Washington metropolitan area.
Jillian has performed her monologues/spoken word extensively in North America for several Churches, Schools, Embassies and Caribbean Organizations in New York, Baltimore, Maryland, Virginia and Texas. She was instrumental in producing “Kings and Queens Hold Court” at Howard University’s Cramton Auditorium and Philadelphia Music Hall with Desperadoes, Mighty Sparrow, Regeneration Now and Singing Sandra. She was also the opening act for the Caribbeana Comedy Concert at Howard University. When visiting her home in Tobago, she makes special appearances at concerts, and book signings.
