Most skin care systems out there contain harmful chemicals that do us more damage than good. Yet we use them without realizing the dangers of what they can do over time.  Let's take a look at some of the chemicals that can be found in Skin care and the dangers they pose.

Parabens: are a class of widely used preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Parabens are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity as well as skin irritation.

Petroleum: Petroleum is a byproduct of the oil refining process. This means it is not sustainable or eco-friendly, and it also explains some of the potential problems with using it. Besides its pore-blocking potential, petroleum jelly carries some potentially bigger problems as well.

Petroleum can’t be metabolized by the skin and just sits as a barrier until it wears off. This means that the body isn’t able to gain any benefit from petroleum, and there is concern that some of the components (like hydrocarbons) may be stored in fat tissue within the body.

There is the potential that petroleum based products contain other harmful chemicals like 1,4 dioxane, a known carcinogen found in almost a quarter of all beauty products tested. There is also potential that it may contribute to other types of cancer because of its estrogenic properties

Sulfates: Are aggressive detergents that attract both oil and water. They are effective in removing grease and grime. They can be found in Shampoos, Face cleansers, dish soap and laundry detergents. Sulfates strip our skin from the protective water barrier by removing the lipids that exist there naturally. This allows chemicals and bacteria to penetrate our skin which can result in significant irritation and inflammation.

one researcher stated that Whether you have cancer, heart disease, diabetes, digestive disorders, autoimmune disease, or Alzheimer's, it all starts with inflammation at the cellular level.

Phthalates: are a group of chemicals used to soften and increase the flexibility of plastic and vinyl. They are used to make plastics flexible and as lubricants in cosmetics. They have been used commercially since the 1920s and more than 18 billion pounds are produced and used globally each year.

They’re potent hormone disruptors. They can alter the reproductive development of male infants and are associated with sperm damage in adult men. Children exposed to phthalates in early life can undergo behavioral changes and develop allergies.  They are also linked to are linked to early puberty in girls and other reproductive harms.

Phthalates are linked to breast and other cancers.

FD&C Colour& Pigments: Synthetic colours from coal tar contain heavy metal salts which deposit toxins in skin causing skin sensitivity / irritation. Absorption can cause depletion of oxygen and deaths. Studies have shown almost all are carcinogenic

Triclosans: a high production volume ingredient used as a bactericide in personal care products such as toothpaste, deodorant, and antibacterial soap, has been linked to heart disease and heart failure. Tricolsan impairs muscle function and skeletal muscle contractility. Numerous studies have shown that triclosan alters testosterone and thyroid serum levels. It also affects estrogen adaptors and synthesis. Since triclosan stores itself in certain cells and has been found to hide in breast milk and blood, it can have long-term hormonal effects that have a potential to be passed along, affecting immune system health, fertility and pregnancy.

Now take a look at your Skin Care products, what are some of the ingredients that it contains? Are there dangerous side effects of these ingredients. What alternatives are there for you? For more information on Natural skin care Click here.  Your skin will love you for it!
