OpenAI's goal is to facilitate the development of AI-powered cybersecurity capabilities for defenders through grants and other forms of support.

The Cybersecurity Grant Program is a groundbreaking $1M initiative designed to boost and quantify AI-powered cybersecurity capabilities while fostering high-level discourse at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity.

The primary aim of the program is to collaborate with defenders across the globe, seeking to change the power dynamics of cybersecurity by leveraging the application of AI and fostering coordination among like-minded individuals working towards collective safety.

The program has three main objectives:

1. Empower defenders: OpenAI is committed to ensuring that cutting-edge AI capabilities primarily benefit defenders, giving them a strategic advantage in the fight against cyber threats.

2. Measure capabilities: OpenAI is actively working on developing methods to quantify the cybersecurity capabilities of AI models, with the goal of enhancing their effectiveness and understanding.

3. Elevate discourse: OpenAI aims to create a platform for rigorous discussions at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, encouraging a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities in this domain.

Traditionally, the cybersecurity landscape has been perceived as favoring attackers over defenders. However, OpenAI recognizes that defenders possess a valuable asset—coordination towards the shared objective of keeping people safe.

The Cybersecurity Grant Program has a range of general project ideas, including data collection and labeling from cyber defenders, detection and mitigation of social engineering tactics, incident triage automation, identification of security issues in source code, and assistance with network or device forensics, among others.

Applicants are encouraged to submit project proposals that align with OpenAI's vision for a secure and innovative AI-driven future. The program will be granting funds in increments of $10,000 USD from the $1M fund, offering API credits, direct funding, and/or equivalents.

Applications will be evaluated on an ongoing basis, with a strong preference for practical applications of AI in defensive cybersecurity, such as tools, methods, and processes. Offensive-security projects will not be considered for funding at this time.

All projects are expected to be licensed or distributed for maximal public benefit and sharing, and proposals with a clear plan for openness will be prioritized.
