OpenAI on Thursday announced a prototype of its search engine, dubbed SearchGPT, which aims to deliver users “fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.” This new AI-powered search engine is set to intensify the competitive pressure on Google, which has long held a dominant position in the search market.

What is SearchGPT?

SearchGPT is an advanced search engine developed by OpenAI, designed to leverage the power of artificial intelligence to provide users with quick, accurate, and relevant answers. Unlike traditional search engines that display a list of web pages, SearchGPT aims to offer direct responses and insights by understanding the context of users' queries. This makes it possible to search in a more conversational and intuitive manner.

The prototype of SearchGPT is currently being tested with a small group of users. OpenAI plans to eventually integrate this tool into its popular ChatGPT chatbot, enhancing its capabilities to handle search queries seamlessly. The integration promises a more natural, interactive search experience, allowing users to ask follow-up questions and receive comprehensive answers in real time.

Key Features of SearchGPT

  1. Fast and Accurate Responses: SearchGPT aims to deliver prompt answers, minimizing the time users spend sifting through search results.
  2. Clear and Relevant Sources: The search engine emphasizes transparency by providing clear references to the sources of its information, ensuring users can trust the accuracy of the responses.
  3. Conversational Search: Users can interact with SearchGPT in a conversational manner, asking follow-up questions and refining their queries on the go.
  4. Multimodal Capabilities: In line with OpenAI's push for multimodality, SearchGPT is designed to handle various types of media, including text, images, audio, and video.

Market Implications

The introduction of SearchGPT comes at a time when Alphabet, Google's parent company, is already facing concerns from investors about the potential market share loss due to the rising popularity of AI-driven search tools. Following the announcement, Alphabet shares fell more than 3% on Thursday, closing at $167.28, while the Nasdaq dropped less than 1%.

Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, Alphabet investors have been wary of OpenAI's potential to disrupt the search market. SearchGPT aims to provide users with a more intuitive and conversational way to search for information, potentially drawing users away from Google's traditional search engine.

Google’s Response

In response to the growing competition, Google launched its own AI-powered search feature, AI Overview, in May. CEO Sundar Pichai described it as the most significant change in search in 25 years. However, the initial rollout faced criticism for producing nonsensical or inaccurate results, leading to public backlash.

Daniel Faggella, founder and head of research at Emerj Artificial Intelligence Research, commented, “Google has been kind of shaking in their boots a little bit since this stuff first popped off.” While Google has not seen a major decline, the company has faced challenges in maintaining its dominance.

OpenAI’s Strategic Moves

The announcement of SearchGPT follows the launch of OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-4o mini. This model, an offshoot of the company's fastest and most powerful model, GPT-4o, was unveiled during a livestreamed event in May.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is valued at over $80 billion. The company, founded in 2015, is under pressure to remain at the forefront of the generative AI market while also finding ways to monetize its innovations. This pressure is compounded by the significant investments required for processors and infrastructure to develop and train its models.

Last month, OpenAI announced the hiring of two top executives and a partnership with Apple that includes integrating ChatGPT with Siri. Sarah Friar, former CEO of Nextdoor and finance chief at Square, joined as chief financial officer, while Kevin Weil, an ex-president at Planet Labs and former senior executive at Twitter and Facebook, joined as chief product officer.

The Future of Multimodality

Both the new mini AI model and the SearchGPT prototype highlight OpenAI’s push towards “multimodality,” or the ability to generate and handle various types of AI-produced media—including text, images, audio, video, and now search—all within a single tool, ChatGPT.

In a blog post, OpenAI stated that SearchGPT's visual results would lead to a “richer understanding” for users, underscoring the company’s commitment to enhancing the search experience.

As OpenAI continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the tech sector is closely watching how these developments will reshape the competitive landscape. The battle for dominance in the search market is intensifying, and SearchGPT represents a significant step in OpenAI's strategy to challenge established players like Google.
