Today, I want to invite you into a brief but sharp-edged conversation about a quiet poison that runs through our social veins:
the lies we tell each other.

This is not an academic thesis. It is a spark, my pet peeve designed to land in the center of your day and disrupt your routine if only for a moment. Consider this alsok me handing you the match, because I want you to add your own kindling to this fire.
These are the lies you absorbe. You know the ones. The phrases that are meant to soothe but instead, they erase. The words that are meant to connect but instead, they dismiss. The social scripts we recite on autopilot, mistaking politeness for honesty, and comfort for truth.
I have long held a grudge against these lies. Not the malicious kind but the insidious ones, born of our ignorance or worse, our foolish belief that we are doing the lesser evil by hiding a harsh reality behind a velvet rope of platitudes. We tell them to our friends, our family, our associates and even to perfect strangers. We think we are being kind. We are, in fact, being absent.
Let us begin at the threshold of grief.
"I am so very sorry for your loss…"
We should just stop there. That is the whole truth. That is the entire offering. But no. We cannot help ourselves. We must follow it with the cosmic coda:
"…I know they've gone to a better place."
Say what? What better place is that, exactly? Have you met one single soul, one emissary from that imagined realm. who has returned with a postcard and a confirmation of the amenities? No. You have not. You are not comforting the grieving; you are comforting yourself with a story you have no evidence to support. It is a lie dressed in liturgical lace.
A disturbing incident has just occurred. The news cameras are rolling, the microphone is thrust into the face of a local resident and,
always, one of them blurts out:
"This is a very nice, quiet neighborhood. Nothing like this ever happens here!"
Lies. It just did. You are standing in the aftermath of the very thing you claim is impossible. The statement is not a reflection of reality; it is a shield against it. We would rather deny the present than accept that safety was always an illusion.
A community is burned to ash. A flood swallows a town. The truth is, the residents may never recover from such devastation. The statistics on long-term trauma, on the fracture of identity, on the quiet suicides that follow years later, these are the unspoken truths.
And yet, we offer up the tall tale:
"We will come back stronger than ever."
Tell that to the millions still suffering from early childhood trauma, still trying to rebuild a self that was shattered before they had language for it. "Stronger" is not a magic incantation. It is a burden. This is not resilience; it is erasure. Wishful thinking or just plain lies, either way, that thinking conveniently ignores the reality of devastation upon the mental, emotional and even physical recovery.
We are not giving hope; we are prescribing a silence.
And then, my favorite, the political contender's lullaby:
"I am going to do much better than the person you have now."

There is too much to say about that lie and too little room and time, to do it justice. But let us just say: if you have to tell us you are better, you probably are not. It is the promise of a better future built on the rubble of a demonized past, and we swallow it like sugar, knowing it will give us a cavity.
The generational gauntlet:
"Things were so much easier for you guys when you were our age."
Lies.
And its close, equally dishonest cousin:
"When we were your age, we had it so much harder."
Now, this one is tricky. Immediately, someone will jump in to inform me about their life during civil conflict or political genocide. Those are not the musings of this article. Clearly, such traumatic events have no timelines for becoming "stronger." They are not fodder for a generational debate. They are scars. But for the rest of us, the ones trading anecdotes about summer jobs and house prices, let us stop pretending that hardship is a competition. Your struggle does not invalidate theirs. Their ease does not erase your pain. The lie is in the comparison itself.
And finally, the greeting ritual.
You are at the grocery store. You are at a networking event. You are at a family gathering. And the greeter, upon locking eyes with you, chirps:
"Good day! How are you today?"
And while saying "how are you today," they are already turning their head, scanning the room for someone more interesting, their feet already carrying them away. They have had no interest whatsoever in your answer.
Just share a greeting. Just say hello. Stop the lying pretense of asking, "And how am I doing?" when you have already decided you do not have the time or the capacity to hear the answer. The question is not a question; it is a performance. And we are all complicit in the theater.
Now, it is your turn.
I have lit the match. Now, add your kindling.
Share your pet peeves in the comments. How have our social graces, our attempts to be "nice" become nothing more than the lies we tell each other? What is the phrase that makes your teeth clench?
The platitude that feels like a dismissal? The question that is not really a question?
Because here is the truth: we cannot heal what we refuse to name. And we cannot connect if we keep reciting scripts designed to keep us apart.
So, name it. Right here. Right now would be just wonderful.
Let us stop lying to each other.
We might just find that the truth, however uncomfortable, is the only thing that actually brings us closer.
With sharp affection,
The Sparrow's Word
