You have heard the whisper. It says the fault lies at the feet of the immigrant, the one with darker skin, the one with an accent, the one who arrived carrying nothing but hope and a willingness to work. The whisper is old. It is the same whisper that was used against the Irish, the Italians, the Jews, the Poles. It is a whisper that has always been a distraction dressed up as an explanation.
Here is the truth, offered gently but without apology: nothing happening in your nation right now is caused by immigration.
Not the hollowed-out wages. Not the crumbling public services.
Not the fear that your children will inherit a world smaller than the one you were promised.
Those things have roots far older than any border, and they were planted long before the first boat docked or the first visa was stamped.
Let us begin in the garden.
For centuries, European powers walked into Africa and Asia and the Americas not as guests but as gardeners of a very particular kind. They did not plant; they uprooted. France did not simply govern its African colonies, it engineered them. Through the CFA franc, a currency system that outlived independence, fourteen African nations were required to park half of their foreign reserves in the French Treasury, their monetary sovereignty signed away in the quiet rooms of 1960.
The land was made to grow what France wanted, the mines were made to yield what French industry needed and the profits flowed north like a river that never learned to turn around. A recent study found that France has been net-appropriating land, water, and materials from its former colonies on a scale that constitutes a quiet, ongoing expropriation, a ledger of unequal exchange that the language of “aid” and “partnership” was designed to hide-11.
Belgium wrote its own chapter in the Congo with a brutality that still staggers the mind: estimates of ten million dead, mass amputations, a forced-labor regime built around rubber and ivory, and a museum in Tervuren that still houses the looted masks and ritual tools of a people who were never asked-34. And when the formal empire ended, the extraction did not. Belgium is today accused of controlling eighty percent of cobalt mining operations in its former colony—the mineral that powers your phone, your electric car, the quiet hum of the future.
England, no stranger to the game, built its standard of living on the cotton of the American South, the tea of India, the diamonds of South Africa, the flesh and labor of the Caribbean. The wealth that now towers over the descendants of the colonized was not earned in a vacuum. It was harvested from gardens that were never the gardener’s to keep.
And now the chickens have come home.
Not to roost, exactly., that word is too gentle. They have come home to rouse.
The former colonies are refusing the old arrangements. Niger has told France that its uranium, which once lit French homes while leaving Nigerien villages in the dark, will no longer be extracted on colonial terms. The prime minister stood at the United Nations and said plainly what had been whispered for generations: that the resource brought his people “nothing but misery, pollution, rebellion, corruption, and desolation, while it brought prosperity and power to the French."
Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have pulled away from the French-backed currency arrangement, forming their own alliance, insisting that sovereignty means something more than a flag.
The economic order that was built on their backs is beginning to crack and the tremor you feel in Europe is not the arrival of strangers.
It is the sound of a foundation shifting.
But the colonial ledger, as vast as it is, is not the whole story of your present unease. There is something else, something new, something that does not care about your passport or your skin color or the language your grandmother spoke.
The machine is waking up.
You have been told by this writer that artificial intelligence will be "THE GREAT EQUALIZER", the tool that lets a young person produce like a veteran, that democratizes creativity, that flattens hierarchies. And in small ways, it does. But the research is beginning to tell a different story. A major study of patent lawyers found that while AI improved the drafts of everyone, it was only the experienced practitioners who retained the underlying skill when the tool was taken away. The juniors did not. “It’s a performance equalizer,” the MIT economist concluded “but a skill-disequalizer”.
The promise of a level playing field is already curving into a new hierarchy, one where those who already had a foundation rise and those who did not are left holding a tool they do not fully understand.
And the economic tremors go deeper than skill. The share of national income going to workers, the slice of the pie that wages represent, has been falling for a quarter of a century. The AI boom is accelerating that fall. Capital is crowding out labor; data centers are capital-intensive and employ very few people; the demand for workers, relative to the wealth being generated, is being quietly depressed.
The people who own the machines are growing richer and the people who work for a living are being told to blame the stranger next door.
One professor of technology transitions warns that AI is advancing so quickly that it could trigger mass layoffs long before new jobs emerge to replace them, a mismatch that has historically fueled social unrest. The same professor points to the Enclosure Acts in England, when displaced farmers rioted and to the coal pit closures of the 1980s, when whole communities were erased overnight. The pattern is not new. What is new is the speed, and the ease with which the blame is being redirected.
This is the heart of the matter, and I want to say it as softly as I can, because it is a hard thing to hold: you are being asked to fear the wrong arrival. The immigrant is not the cause of your insecurity. The immigrant is, in fact, one of the few things holding the roof up. In the euro area, foreign workers accounted for half of the labor force growth over the past three years, 3.1 million additional workers who filled gaps left by an aging population and kept economies from contracting.
They are not the ones who sent the factories abroad. They are not the ones who decided that a nurse’s labor was worth less than a hedge fund manager’s bonus. They are not the ones who built an economic system that extracts wealth from the many and concentrates it in the hands of the very few. They are simply the ones who arrived and who are now being asked to carry the weight of a disappointment that was engineered elsewhere.
The extremist conservative will tell you that this is an excuse, that borders are the answer, that the problem is cultural, that the numbers don’t lie. But the numbers do lie when they are presented without context.
Irregular migration to Europe fell by twenty-six percent in 2025;
migrant smuggling cases in Germany dropped by more than forty percent.
The “crisis” at the border is, in many places, already receding.
What is not receding is the crisis inside the economy, the quiet redistribution of security from workers to owners and the oldest trick in the political playbook: when the house is cold, blame the person who just walked through the door.

We do not deny it. We do not tell you that your anger is wrong. Your anger is a signal and signals are precious. But we must be careful about what the signal is pointing toward. If you are tired, the answer is not to make someone else more tired. If you are afraid, the answer is not to make someone else more afraid. The harvest we are living through was not sown by the immigrant. It was sown by empires that took more than they gave, by economic systems that treated people as inputs and resources as infinite and now by a technological shift that is redistributing power and wealth at a speed that institutions cannot match.
The romantic truth and I believe this with all my heart, is that the human response to a shifting world has always been connection, not division. The nurse who is exhausted and the immigrant who is exhausted are not enemies. They are the same person in different clothes, both holding up a system that has stopped holding them. The teacher who buys pencils and the student who wonders about the future are not rivals for a shrinking pie. They are the people who will have to build a new one, together, or not at all.
Shut the door on the whisper. It is not your voice. It never was. Your voice is the one that says: I see the ledger, I see the machine and I will not let them make me cruel. That is the voice that has always been the best of us. And it is still here, waiting to be heard.
