Its goal is to help creators grow their audience, increase monetization, and professionalize their content operations over a six‑month period.

Key Features & Funding

  • Amount: Up to CAD $20,000 per applicant.

  • Type of Contribution: Non‑repayable funding.

  • Coverage: The CMF contribution typically covers up to 75% of eligible project costs. Applicants must show or provide the rest (through their own funds or other financing) for the full budget.

  • Duration: Activities funded must be completed within about six months.

What Can Be Funded

The funding can cover a range of eligible costs and activities including:

  • Creation of new, original, prepared & edited video content.

  • Video production labour: writing, filming, editing, post‑production.

  • Renting equipment or locations.

  • Purchase of equipment (limited to a maximum percentage of total costs, typically around 20%).

  • Marketing/business growth: social media management, marketing/branding consultants, promotion, etc.

  • Legal / accounting fees, software subscriptions.

There are some costs that are not eligible (or are only partially eligible), for example large capital expenditures like purchasing real estate.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for DCPP, you’ll need to meet several requirements:

  1. Canadian status & ownership

    • Content must be owned, meaning the underlying rights are Canadian, significantly developed by Canadians.

    • Produced in Canada, with at least 75% of eligible costs being Canadian costs.

    • The applicant must maintain Canadian ownership and control (creative, executive, financial).

  2. Applicant track record

    • You need to have been active on at least one eligible platform (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or Facebook) for at least the past 12 months.

    • Posting frequency: an average of at least one post per month over that period.

    • Must meet a minimum threshold of audience engagement, which differs depending on whether your content is in English or French.

  3. Corporate structure

    • While individuals (creators) can apply, in order to receive the funding, the recipient must have or establish a Canadian for‑profit corporation controlled by Canadians.

  4. Content type

    • The content must be original, prepared and edited, intended for consumption on social media.

    • It must align with certain generalized genres: drama (including comedy), documentary (excluding certain formats like rants, opinion‑only content), children or youth content, or variety/performing arts.

Application Process & Important Dates

  • Review the Program Guidelines, eligibility, and all reference documents.

  • Applications are submitted through CMF’s online system.

  • CMF offers webinars and resources to help applicants understand the requirements.

  • Keep an eye on the opening and closing dates. For example, for the 2025‑2026 round, it opens on September 30, 2025, and closes October 16, 2025.

Benefits Beyond the Money

  • Helps creators professionalize their operations (business planning, marketing strategy).

  • Opportunity to expand audience reach and monetization streams.

  • Credibility boost: being selected by a national program like CMF helps with visibility, potential sponsorships, partnerships.

  • Community & peer recognition, networking, possibly collaboration with other creators.

What to Watch Out For / Tips to Strengthen Your Application

  • Have a solid plan: Define clear goals for audience growth and monetization, and show how your strategy over six months will realistically reach those goals.

  • Evidence of prior success & engagement: with data/examples (views, follower growth, engagement rates).

  • Budget carefully: make sure you can justify all costs, show how you’ll cover the remaining ~25% of costs not funded by CMF.

  • Content genre clarity: pick a genre aligned with CMF’s allowed content types, and make sure that your proposed content is prepared/edited.

  • Ownership & control: ensure you maintain the creative and ownership rights, and that the production work will meet the Canadian ownership criteria.

  • Corporate setup: If you are not yet incorporated, plan ahead – if your application is successful, you’ll need the corporate entity in place to receive funding.

  • Plan for the post‑funding period: since the funding is for 6 months, think beyond the pilot: how will things scale, how will you sustain growth, etc.

Examples & What’s Been Done So Far

  • In the 2024‑2025 cohort, CMF selected 16 creators who together received almost CAD $320,000.

  • The selected creators had large audiences: over 6 million subscribers across their channels and almost 900 million views overall.

  • Most recipients got the full $20,000 or amounts very close to it.

Is This Right for You?

If you:

  • Are a Canadian creator (or planning to become one) with some track record on social media,

  • Want to treat content creation as more than a hobby — as a business,

  • Are serious about growing audience, improving quality, professionalizing aspects like marketing, business operations, etc.,

  • Can commit to creating several prepared/edited short form videos and carrying out activities over 6 months,

… then this program is likely a very good opportunity.
