As artificial intelligenc
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve rapidly, so does the demand for high-quality training data—and much of that data comes from publicly available websites. While traditional search engines index content to drive traffic and visibility, AI crawlers often scrape vast amounts of content without offering value or permission.
Until now, website owners had limited options:
-
Allow everything (and risk exploitation),
-
Or block bots entirely (losing visibility or missing opportunities).
Enter Cloudflare’s latest innovation: Pay Per Crawl—a new way for site owners to take back control.
What Is Pay Per Crawl?
Pay Per Crawl is a feature within Cloudflare’s AI Audit suite, currently in closed beta, that allows website owners to charge AI crawlers a fee to access their content. It transforms your site from a passive target for AI bots into an active revenue-generating asset.
How It Works: How Cloudflare Is Helping Content Owners Monetize AI Access to Their Websites
When an AI crawler tries to access content on a Cloudflare-protected site with Pay Per Crawl enabled:
-
If it supports payment, it sends payment intent in the request headers.
-
The site then responds with a standard HTTP 200 (OK) if payment is approved.
-
If payment is not presented, the site returns an HTTP 402 (Payment Required) response with pricing details.
Cloudflare acts as the Merchant of Record, meaning they manage the billing, technical infrastructure, and pricing enforcement—making the process seamless for site owners.
Key Features and Benefits
✅ For Website Owners:
-
Charge AI bots to access your content by setting a per-request price per Cloudflare zone.
-
Protect your intellectual property from unauthorized scraping.
-
Generate passive revenue from your existing content (help docs, blogs, databases, etc.).
✅ For AI Companies:
-
Gain legitimate access to high-quality, structured data by paying fairly.
-
Avoid being blocked and gain access to more premium sources.
⚠️ Important Note
If you’ve already blocked an AI crawler using Cloudflare’s WAF (Web Application Firewall) or Bot Management, those block rules will override Pay Per Crawl. In other words, the crawler won’t be charged—they’ll simply be denied access.

Why It Matters
This is a game-changer for the content economy.
For the first time, human-created knowledge, documentation, and niche content can generate revenue as a digital asset, especially as AI companies race to improve their models with higher-quality data.
Pay Per Crawl aligns incentives—making it fairer, more transparent, and potentially very profitable for creators, SaaS platforms, educators, and anyone with valuable web content.
