Toronto-based reggae artist Fitzgerald Haughton transforms his experience caring for vulnerable people into music that challenges society to listen, reflect and act.
TORONTO, CANADA — Some musicians find their inspiration on stage. Others discover it in the everyday struggles of people whose stories rarely make the headlines.
For Jamaican-born reggae artist Captain Love, whose real name is Fitzgerald Haughton, inspiration came from an unexpected place: the frontlines of Canada's healthcare system.
Long before his music began attracting international attention, Captain Love was helping care for people who depended on others for their safety, dignity and well-being. His experiences would eventually inspire one of his most meaningful recordings, What About Them?
When Compassion Becomes a Calling
Trained as a nurse's assistant, Captain Love spent more than a decade working as a personal support worker in Canada.
His responsibilities brought him face-to-face with vulnerable individuals and the challenges confronting the people entrusted with their care.
Then came the COVID-19 pandemic.
As healthcare workers struggled to protect patients and residents, Captain Love witnessed the emotional and physical demands of frontline service firsthand.
In an August 2021 interview with The Jamaica Star, he described the experience as heart-wrenching and frightening. Despite the pressure, he emphasized the importance of remaining selfless and focusing on the people whose lives were at stake.
Those experiences raised a question that would become the title of his song:
What About Them?
A Song for People Who Deserve to Be Heard
Rather than allow those experiences to fade into memory, Captain Love turned to music.
What About Them? emerged as a reflection on the challenges facing vulnerable people, particularly those living in nursing homes, and the healthcare workers responsible for their care.
Co-produced by Captain Love, Merrick Dyer and Steve Major, the song was released through Spain Town Productions in late 2020.
Its message extends beyond the pandemic.
It invites listeners to consider the people who are too easily overlooked: older adults, individuals requiring daily assistance, essential workers and others whose needs do not always receive the attention they deserve.
For Captain Love, reggae offers an opportunity to bring those experiences into the public conversation.
His music asks audiences not simply to hear a melody, but to consider the lives and social realities behind it.

From Spanish Town to Toronto: A Lifetime of Music
Captain Love's passion for music began long before his healthcare career.
Growing up in Spanish Town, Jamaica, he absorbed an eclectic mix of musical influences, from Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye to Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra.
His brother Donald Haughton and longtime friend Merrick Dyer helped nurture his musical development by teaching him to play guitar.
In 1985, he recorded his first song, Armed Struggle, at the legendary Channel One Recording Studio in Kingston.
After immigrating to Canada, he continued pursuing his musical ambitions while building a career in healthcare.
Over the years, his sound evolved into a blend of roots reggae, soul, gospel and socially conscious storytelling.
Today, songs such as Africa Arise, The System and his interpretation of Bob Marley's Concrete Jungle reflect his continuing interest in music that addresses real-world challenges while encouraging hope and positive change.
More Than Entertainment: Music With a Purpose
Captain Love belongs to a tradition of reggae artists who believe music can entertain audiences while confronting difficult social questions.
His healthcare experience gives that philosophy a personal dimension.
He has witnessed the vulnerability of people who rely on others for their care. He understands the sacrifices demanded of frontline workers. And through his recordings, he has found another way to draw attention to those realities.

His story is a reminder that compassion and creativity need not exist in separate worlds.
Sometimes, the experiences that shape a person's professional life also become the experiences that define their artistic voice.
And sometimes, a song can begin with something as simple and important as asking society to remember those who are struggling.
